Farm of the Week
August 5, 2009
Trying something new: featuring a local farm a week. I will tell a little about the farm’s history, how the farm survives, what they grow, and how you can benefit from them.
Week 1: Volante Farms
Volante is located in Needham, MA (about a half hour southwest of Boston). They have been growing produce and flowers since 1917 using greenhouses in the spring and 3 vegetable fields. They sell perennials and annuals and provide everything you need for your garden. They sell a full line of produce throughout the year with tomatoes, squash, eggplant (among others) in the spring, berries, peas, lettuce and beets (among others) in the summer, and squashes in the winter. They also sell vegetable seeds and Christmas trees. They have a fantastic onsite farm stand, service local restaurants like the Italian Trattoria Spiga and Fava Restaurant, and they are hosting a Corn Festival on August 9th. Check out their blog and website and keep your eyes peeled for the free workshops they hold.
